The use of in vitro culture technique for production of haploid higher plants has been increasingly important (Vasil and Nitsch 1975; Reinert and bajaj 1977). Reinert and bajaj (1977) have reviewed that anthers from more than 18 genera covering 25 species of dicotyledons have been cultured to generate callus, embryos, and (or) whole plants. Even the most difficult materials such as cereals (7 genera covering 16 species) could also be cultured to induce organogenesis and (or) form complete plants (Clapham 1977). However, these successful works have not included cassava (Manihot esculenta crantz), an economically important tropical crop which suplies staple foods to an estimated 300 million peoploe around the world (Nestel 1974). |
